| How was your birthing experience in Southeast Texas? One of the best things you can do to improve maternity and natal care in our community is to let them know! Write a letter to the hospital CEO and copy it to the director of women's services, and general management detailing what features and services you enjoyed and what things you would like to see offered for your next birth (i.e.: birthing balls or bars, perineal massage, 24/7 rooming-in, Board certified Lactation Consultants on staff every day, etc.). Remember: You are a consumer! Doctors, nurses, hospitals and other staff members are paid consultants. Letting them know of outstanding caregivers and services you enjoyed will help ensure those things continue, just as constructive criticism can help affect positive changes for future deliveries and help bring Mother Friendly and Baby Friendly facilities to our area. Don't be afraid to speak out and let them know what kind of maternity and natal care you expect! Not sure what to write? Let Whole Mothering Center help you write your letter! |

| Dr. Michel Odent, renowned researcher and natural birth advocate, said in The Nature of Birth & Breast-feeding, "When you consider birth as an involuntary process involving old, primitive, mammalian structures of the brain, you set aside the assumption that a woman must learn how to give birth. It is implicit in the mammalian interpretation that one cannot actively help a woman give birth. The goal is to avoid disturbing her unnecessarily." Whole Mothering Center agrees with this statement. We also feel that it is important to know "what to expect", which is why we offer a Childbirth Preparation and Support group instead of a traditional 'childbirth education' class. We believe that meeting the pregnant woman's social need to connect with other pregnant women is a vital part of her education and readiness to give birth. The first part of this process begins with our "Birth Fear Discussion Group". The process continues with a consultation with the Doulas of the Whole Mothering Center and, if the mother chooses, we'll provide you with resources for a more traditional childbirth education series by a certified educator. "You're braver than you believe. Stronger than you seem. And smarter than you think." - Christopher Robin in Pooh's Grand Adventure "We have a secret in our culture, it's not that birth is painful, it's that women are strong." - Laura Stavoe Harm If you are interested in attending our Childbirth Preparation & Support Series or learning more about Whole Mothering Center's services, please contact us. |
| "Treating normal labors as though they were complicated can become a self-fulfilling prophecy." - Rooks The Whole Mothering Center is offering a free screening of "The Business of Being Born" and discussion of the film and it's impact on women as the first part of our Childbirth Preparation & Support Series. The second part is a discussion of "Birth Fear" - What is it? Where did it come from? What can we do about it? The third part is a discussion on Local Resources - Practitioners and services in and around Beaumont. Our goal is to help women learn what is normal. If you are currently pregnant or working in women's health care, you'll really enjoy being a part of this discussion group. We meet on the fourth Thursday of each month at The Logon Cafe'. | Why do we recommend midwives? We are currently working on an online petition to help address the issue of Midwifery Care in Southeast Texas, among other things. "Having a highly trained obstetrical surgeon attend a normal birth is analogous to having a pediatric surgeon babysit a healthy 2-year-old." - Marsden Wagner "Unfortunately, the role of obstetrics has never been to help women give birth. There is a big difference between the medical discipline we call "obstetrics" and something completely different, the art of midwifery. If we want to find safe alternatives to obstetrics, we must rediscover midwifery. To rediscover midwifery is the same as giving back childbirth to women. And imagine the future if surgical teams were at the service of the midwives and the women instead of controlling them." - Michel Odent, MD |
