Designed to help women in crisis pregnancies. Founded in 1995 by a small group of Christians seeking to educate the
public on all available options, development of the unborn child and confidential counseling.
Our list of Recommended Practitioners is made up of health care providers who have been proven to show support and dedication to bringing
"Baby Friendly" practices to Southeast Texas. We have added practitioners whom we have personally had success with, or those that our
clients have recommended to us for addition here. If you would like to add your health care provider, please contact us!

Research shows that in a normal, low-risk pregnancy, out-of hospital deliveries
are just as safe as hospital deliveries. Midwives are equipped with much of the
same emergency equipment that doctors are and are skilled in handling many
types of emergency situations from postpartum hemorrhage to shoulder dystocia
to infant resuscitation and often have MUCH more experience with normal
delivery than obstetricians since they view birth from a much different perspective,
that birth is a normal part of the circle of life and not always a medical event that
must be managed.
Southeast Texas has one of the highest cesarean section rates in the nation and
currently does not allow midwives to practice in our local hospitals. St. Elizabeth’s
closed their midwife clinic in early 2003, which had been a part of the hospital for
years, effectively ending Beaumont-area women’s access to quality in-hospital
midwifery care.
Fortunately, we have several midwives who are more than willing to travel to the
Golden Triangle to assist mothers who choose a home birth. For more
information, please contact them!

How was your birthing experience in Southeast Texas?

One of the best things you can do to improve maternity and natal care in our community is to let them know!
Write a letter to the hospital CEO and copy it to the director of women's services, and general management detailing what features and services you
enjoyed and what things you would like to see offered for your next birth (i.e.:  birthing balls or bars, perineal massage, 24/7 rooming-in, Board certified
Lactation Consultants on staff every day, etc.).

Remember: You are a consumer! Doctors, nurses, hospitals and other staff members are paid consultants. Letting them know of outstanding caregivers
and services you enjoyed will help ensure those things continue, just as constructive criticism can help affect positive changes for future deliveries and
help bring
Mother Friendly and Baby Friendly facilities to our area.
Don't be afraid to speak out and let them know what kind of maternity and natal care you expect
!

Childbirth & Postpartum Doula Services
We are pleased to offer Southeast Texas women Childbirth and Postpartum Doula services through the Whole Mothering Center. We feel that the
relationship between a woman and her labor support team is extremely important in helping her achieve the birth that she wants. Additionally, we feel that
providing hands-on support for new mothers is key in helping them adjust to their new role and lowering the risk of postpartum depression.

To these ends, we have several women who are either certified doulas through a nationally recognized certifying program such as Birth Arts, DONA or
Childbirth International, or in training to become certified. We're confident that one of our Doulas will meet your needs!

If you will be giving birth or seeking postpartum support in the near future, please visit our
Doula Information page and schedule a consultation with us

Dr. Michel Odent, renowned researcher and natural birth advocate, said in The Nature of Birth & Breast-feeding, "When you consider birth as an
involuntary process involving old, primitive, mammalian structures of the brain, you set aside the assumption that a woman must learn how to
give birth. It is implicit in the mammalian interpretation that one cannot actively help a woman give birth. The goal is to avoid disturbing her
unnecessarily."

Whole Mothering Center agrees with this statement. We also feel that it is important to know "what to expect", which is why we offer a Childbirth
Preparation and Support group instead of a traditional 'childbirth education' class. We believe that meeting the pregnant woman's social need to
connect with other pregnant women is a vital part of her education and readiness to give birth. The first part of this process begins with our "Birth
Fear Discussion Group".  The process continues with a consultation with the Doulas of the Whole Mothering Center and, if the mother chooses,
we'll provide you with resources for a more traditional childbirth education series by a certified educator.

The Whole Mothering Center is offering a free screening of "The Business of
Being Born" and discussion of the film and it's impact on women as the first
part of our Childbirth Preparation & Support Series. The second part is a
discussion of "Birth Fear" - What is it? Where did it come from? What can we
do about it? The third part is a discussion on Local Resources - Practitioners
and services in and around Beaumont.
Our goal is to help women learn what is normal.

If you are currently pregnant or working in women's health care, you'll really
enjoy being a part of this discussion group. We meet on the fourth Thursday
of each month at The Logon Cafe'.

Why do we recommend midwives?

We are currently working on an online petition to help address the issue of Midwifery Care in Southeast Texas, among other things.

"Having a highly trained obstetrical surgeon attend a normal birth is analogous to having a pediatric surgeon babysit a healthy 2-year-old." - Marsden Wagner

"Unfortunately, the role of obstetrics has never been to help women give birth. There is a big difference between the medical discipline we call "obstetrics" and something
completely different, the art of midwifery. If we want to find safe alternatives to obstetrics, we must rediscover midwifery. To rediscover midwifery is the same as giving back
childbirth to women. And imagine the future if surgical teams were at the service of the midwives and the women instead of controlling them." - Michel Odent, MD
